Hoisin sauce is a thick, fragrant sauce used in Chinese cuisine, prepared from soy sauce, sugar, rice vinegar, garlic, chili paste, and aromatic spices. It adds a sweet and savory depth to stir-fries, glazes, and dips.

Ingredients
- Garlic - 2 cloves
- Cornstarch - 1 tsp
- Water - 50 ml
- Rice Vinegar - 2 tbsp
- Sugar - 2 tbsp
- Soy Sauce - 120 ml
- Chili Paste - 1 tbsp
- Chinese Five-Spice Powder - 1 tsp
- Sesame Oil - 1 tsp
Directions
Step 1
In a small bowl, whisk 120 ml soy sauce, 2 tbsp sugar, and 2 tbsp rice vinegar.
Step 2
Stir in 2 minced garlic cloves, 1 tbsp chili paste, 1 tsp Chinese five-spice powder, and 1 tsp sesame oil.
Step 3
In a separate cup, dissolve 1 tsp cornstarch in 50 ml water to make a slurry.
Step 4
Transfer mixture to a small saucepan and bring to a simmer over medium heat.
Step 5
Stir in cornstarch slurry and cook 1–2 minutes until sauce thickens.
Step 6
Remove from heat and let cool. Use immediately or store in refrigerator.
Cook's Notes
For a smoother sauce, strain out the garlic bits before using.
